What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ‘ray-key’) is a Japanese technique for channeling natural energy (sometimes called chi or life force).

It is simply the transference, through the palms, of the natural energy that is present in all of us. It is gentle, safe yet powerful and promotes a healthy mind and spirit. It also gives physical benefit by aiding the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

How is Reiki given?

Usually lying on a massage treatment table or sitting in a chair. I position my palms about a foot from the body in a series of positions. Occasionally, for treating specific areas of the body, I will place my hands on the body. There are 7 main positions, which are the energy centres where life force constantly flows. These are called ‘chakra’ and can be found at the top of the head, the forehead, throat, heart, solar plexus, tummy and base of the spine.

These centres can become blocked for a variety of reasons (stress, tension, past anxieties) and this is when you can feel low/off balance/out of kilter. I can feel these blockages and work to clear them, so the flow and balance is restored.

What should I wear?

You will remain fully clothed and can wear your usual clothes.
Casual, loose clothes are ideal, so that you feel comfortable. I also have warm throws which you are welcome to use, or of course you can bring your own.

How long is the session?

A session is around 45 minutes. Before it begins, I’ll talk you through the treatment and answer any questions you may have.

Where will it be?

I have a comfortable Reiki table and travel to see my clients at their home or office. I’m happy travelling within half an hour of Lewes, Sussex.

What does Reiki feel like?

Experiences vary from person to person. Clients often feel warmth, tingling and a sense of protection, deep relaxation and comfort.

Some people feel emotional and spiritual experiences such as a sense of clarity, peace and a feeling of worry draining away. In all, a very pleasant and calming experience.

What will I feel like afterwards?

Immediately afterwards you may feel slightly sleepy, as Reiki promotes deep relaxation. I suggest you take five minutes or so to relax with a glass of water until you’re ready to go. Many of my clients choose an evening session – especially if poor sleeping patterns are an issue – so they can take themselves off into a deep sleep.

Within two to three days, you could experience dull aches in the areas that have been worked on. This is the body healing and cleansing itself of toxins and is a positive sign.

Is it safe for pregnant women?

Yes, Reiki is completely natural and many pregnant women feel a positive benefit. To make sure you’re comfortable at any stage of pregnancy, you may want to lie on your side or sit for the treatment.

Is Reiki religious?

No. Reiki is about natural energy and there is no particular religious belief system attached to it.

What is Reiki good for treating?

Reiki is a holistic treatment and can help both physical and emotional conditions. I have had positive results with poor sleep, stress, muscular problems, back problems, low energy/immune system.  Channeling energy simply helps the body to heal itself. If you have a particular problem, we can discuss this before the treatment so that I can concentrate on the relevant area – as well as the seven energy centres (chakras).

What are chakras?

Chakras are areas in the body recognised in Hindu, Buddhist and Yogic traditions.

They are ‘energy centres’ through which our life force flows. They are: Crown, located at the top of the head (promotes understanding); Third eye, located in the centre of the forehead (seeing and intuition, balancing this chakra aids psychic ability and balances the pineal gland); Throat, located in the throat (it’s function is communication and creativity); Heart, located in the centre of the chest (love and compassion, balancing this chakra benefits the circulatory system, heart and thymus). Solar plexus, located in the area above the navel (it’s function is will, power, laughter and anger. Associated with calming emotions and frustration, easing tension); Sacral, located in the lower abdomen (it’s function is desire, sexuality, pleasure and procreation); Root, located at the base of the spine (it’s function is survival, grounding, stillness and stability. Balancing this chakra gives energy to the physical body, controls fear and increases overall health).

My clients often report of being able to feel each of these areas being affected, while they are in a relaxed state with their eyes closed.

How much does it cost?

A session costs £45.
